Inspired by Brenda’s listener question on this week’s podcast, I’ve realized there are a lot of things that I irrationally or rationally, as I’ve made up in my brains seemingly perfectly reasonable (kind of the same way I can make myself think Taco Bell is a good idea.) reasons to avoid certain things. So I thought I’d make a quick list.
1) My Girlfriend is a Gumiho.
Lets start off with the very items which started off the list, Gumiho. I know it’s a classic, I know lots of people love it, but I just can’t do it. Why? Umm….I saw a clip and the hero irritated me, and I heard a rumor about how it ended and it turned me off. I have no idea whether this possible spoiler is right or not, but once I have an idea in my head, there it is. FOR LIFE.
Yep, this might be a shocker! Unless you know me in person as I won’t hesitate to be all–“EXO? I don’t like ’em!” Why? Do I not like their music? Did they do something to offend me? Embarrassingly, No. This is simply a gut instinct. It seemed like when SM created EXO they forgot about Super Junior and, as a massive Super Junior fan, it was my responsibility to do what I could to stand up for them–and apparently for me that means disliking their usurpers.
Yes! I know this is a Kdrama classic, Yes, I know it’s pretty much cannon. Yes, I know that you can’t consider yoruself a true Kdrama fan unless you’ve seen it. I guess I’ll just never go pro then. I can’t do it–I heard how it ended and I just can’t make myself watch it as I really dislike open endings.
Despite all the pressure and all the assurances that this show is awesome–I just can’t do it. This one has no rhyme or reason to my stubbornness. And not that it’s grown into a thing that I’m kind of known for, I’m having too much of a good time taunting my Roommate loving friends with my refusal to submit to ever cave in.
5) Yoo In Na
There are actresses that I don’t like for some reason or another, some actors I refuse to watch because of past drama wrongs, but Yoo In Na? She hasn’t committed any such offence. Lots of people like her. She seems perfectly serviceable as an actress, but for some reason, I just don’t buy, I can’t move past her as an actress to slip into the character, and it just takes me out of the drama. So, I avoid dramas she is in. (Which is too bad as her new drama sounds good.)
6) Ojakyo Brothers.
Yes, I know this show is awesome. I know it’s got Joo Won in it. I know it’s a family drama which I typically love. But I just can not make myself watch it! It might be the 50 episodes which deters me, but I’ve watched 50 episode dramas before (even longer ones!) It might be Uee, who I have trouble buying as an actress. This is one of the few where I want to get over my roadblock–but it’s not happening.
7) Rewatching Scent of a Woman.
Nope, it’s not about that ending. I’d actually like to see that ending again as when I watched it, the drama wasn’t available anywhere and I’d bought what turned out to be a bad copy off eBay where the subs got really, really bad at the end. Nope, it’s not the buckets of tears that would be coming my way, but instead the middle wannabe girlfriend and dominant father plot lines. It may not be as bad as I remember, but I seem to remember being irritated how much time we spent keeping our couple apart, when they still had to deal with you know—the real thing issue was going to separate them–cancer kind of has a way of making the rest of the bullshit unpalatable.
8) Noona romances. Oh noona romances…why does everyone else love you and I do not? Why are what seems like most dramas now are noona romances? If I can’t see our couple together in my head 5, 10, 15 years down the line? Then I’m not going to watch. This is also why I have trouble with high school romance storylines.
9) Laws of the city
I actually have a very rational reason for not ever watching this variety show. They came here and filmed in NYC. They were right here in my backyard for a while, and I never once was able to find them. I even went looking too! I will never be able to watch this show without thinking of what might have been.
So how about you? Are there any things you, for some reason, refuse to watch or listen to?
