Podcast Episode 36: BTS and the Kdrama Candy Heroes

Posted by Cherry Cordial on October 14, 2015

Podcast time! Seems like it’s been forever since we’ve had a good Kdrama chat. This episode, we answer some awesomely long-winded listener questions and comments regarding the mythical candy hero, Smile Dong Hae, the length and subbing of Taiwanese dramas, and the classic drama All About Eve. We also weigh in on the recent BTS US debacle, and we, as usual, go off and various tangents, including the tale of Mr. McFeeley and his hunt to find real Korean people to show off his new Running Man addiction.

Stephanie would like to apologize to the following
  • Kfangurl, for possibly implying we might not trust her taste in dramas. Not what she meant. She’s sure your taste in dramas is delightful, she was just wondering how your taste in dramas matched up with hers.
  • BigBang, for not letting Cherry Cordial talk about your Las Vegas Show.
  • Sean McFeeley, for telling the listening world about your Running Man adventures.
Thanks for listening! See you next time.

Due to some server glitches that had the unfortunate effect of eating our posts, the podcast was removed, but we now keep copies of all this shizzel! (Always back up your site guys!) To those of you who took the time to write comments (YAY, thank you so much!) don’t worry, we were able to get those as well. Since I can’t put them into the comments as you, I’ll add them for you. Sorry for the inconvenience!

    Replacement comment from Kfangurl:

Lol. I MADE IT INTO YOUR PODCAST!!! XD It’s ok Steph, no offense taken.. Over time, I’ve come to realize that we DO have slightly different preferences when it comes to dramas. But YES, thank you Cherry, we DO like enough of the same stuff (yay!).

What a nostalgic walk down memory lane about Barefoot Friends. OMG that feels like forever ago!!! That was a HUGE learning curve for me, and, it was SUCH a great experience working with both of you. Thanks for suggesting me for the drama club, Steph! Twas a great experience and even though there was that one time that we had to deliver our drama club stuff while I was traveling and Cherry had to wake up at 5am to chat coz of it, no regrets! Woot!

    Replacement comment from Purplurrrr:

Hi Stephanie – Glad I made you day and our friendship is NOT on the line. I LOVED the recasting of Ohm. There were times when I would watch the “new” Ohm and try to mentally recast with the “old” Ohm and was very glad the recasting had happened. I liked the first actor perfectly fine but he always seemed to have a permanent smirk which did not suit the emotional struggles that Ohm was going through while he was deciding what he actually felt about Mick. The script did well in fleshing out the Ohm/Mick relationship that we only got glimpses of in the book. Hands down my favorite couple after Phun/Noh.

Cherry – I’ve only read the Kuda translation of the book. I love the book so much that it’s downloaded into a Word doc and I’m editing it for clarity. As a former ESL teacher it’s engrained in me to make writing flow more naturally for English. Just can’t help myself! I read parts of it almost every day. I love being immersed into that world. It’s the one thing I miss in the series: Noh’s voice and narration.

If you’re on tumblr follow triplenyay. She is doing translations for the last 5 episodes. She has episode 36 already done and is working backwards to 31. You can watch the unsubbed versions and have a screen open with her subs and know what they’re saying. Though you can still watch episode 31 without subs and not have to know what’s being said. Just watch Phun stake his claim to Noh. So so cute. You’re going to love Episode 31! (or at leas the Phun/Noh sections!)

Cherry – also totally agree on your “Veteran” recommendation. I saw it and was blown away by Yoo In Ah’s character. Totally different from “SS” and “Secret Love Affair” and absolutely believable. Lots of fun! Worth driving 30 minutes and paying $12 to see.

Stephanie – Have to disagree with you on “Witch’s Romance” as I really liked it. But then I love noona romances and the chemistry between the OTP was out of sight.

To help me get over Love Sick ending I started watching Takumi-Kun. It’s 5 Japanese movies which take place in a boys school and follow the relationship of Takumi and Gii. Movie one is fine but they recast for Movies 2-5 and the chemistry between those actors makes this one smoking! There is also lots of fan fic about them and shipping of the actors who were quite willing to accommodate the fans love of their relationship.

Hope I answered all your questions! Think I’ll read me a chapter or two of Love Sick!

The male lead in “I Do I Do” is SUCH a Candy. Even more so because female lead played by Kim Sun-ah is his boss and is really mean to him.
