Kim Bum As A Baddie?

In a surprise move, Kim Bum has just signed on to play the baddie  in Mrs Cop 2. Or, what it more sounds like a reboot? As the main cast of the first show are not coming back. While I don’t care about the show at all, I am interested in the direction Kim Bum seems to be taking his career.

As in a, he’s determined to not get pigeon holed into a type? Or he just wants to try a little bit of everything? Many actors out there, male or female, it seems as though the trajectory of their career is set on what’s going to get them to the top of the lead romantic role drama—and then what will keep them there. We’ll see actors taking the same sort of roles in the same sort of dramas as, I don’t know, it’s expected of them? The whole, what’s the biggest and best new upcoming drama? Producers are no better: well, who is the biggest new star, lets get them! Rather than seeing who is best for the parts themselves.

Kim Bum, he’s pretty enough and a good enough actor to, I’m sure, have been offered those sort of roles if he’d wanted. I mean, look how hot the (well, most of them) boys of Boys Over Flowers were once they finished that drama?

It’s also interesting that he’s choosing to take a chance with dramas rather than movie roles as isn’t that the more traditional way? Get to the top of the drama heap in the romantic whatnot, then go arty and stretch in the movie roles. Not to mention, you don’t hear much about Kim Bum at the movies. I know he did that one where he played a gigolo or something, but that was a while ago.

While I thought Kim Bum was amazeballs in Padam Padam and he was one of the only reasons to keep watching Hidden Identity, I can’t say that I’m at a point where I’ll watch a drama just for him. This new drama where he plays some sort of evil loan shark (although I guess aren’t all loan shark characters evil in dramas? Except maybe Liars Game. But that side character was more of a bumbling loan shark than a ‘I’m going to rip off your fingers for non payment’ loan shark.) I have no interest at all in watching. Not even to check it out. Which is weird as I’ve been on a total police and procedural kick lately.

Too bad Kim Bum, maybe next time—whatever the role may be.

You know, I would hope for a bad guy loan shark that was all about the sexy and not so much about the redemption. Then, he can die nicely at the end so there is no lingering second lead syndrome. Think of Sweet Potato from I Need Romance 3 level skinship – only he’s a bad dude.

I hated the first Mrs Cop. Only got 5 episodes in. Sadly, Kim Bum is not enough to make me sit through bad writing….. I am assuming it is the same writer? If not, I might at least watch an episode or two.

Same writer that I can see. Yeah, Kim Bum wasn’t enough to keep me in Hidden Identity really, I was doing a DramaFever Drama Club and they frown on it if you dump a show half way through due to awefulness.

I admire him for trying out different roles and having the courage to go against expectations. BUT I quick Mrs. Cop after one episode and I don’t plan on watching Mrs. Cop 2 either. Sorry Bummy. I love you, but not enough to watch a boring drama just for you.

Though, I watched IRIS just for TOP… but TOP has a special place in my heart.
