Musical Monday: The WTFudge Just Happened Edition

Posted by Stephanie on November 7, 2016

bapSo, BAP is out with new music! YAY! So, this means BAP is out with a new video…yay? Let’s all just remember how much BAP loves their storytelling videos. More importantly, let’s all remember how BAP loves their violent storytelling videos.

Yeah, well their new video, Skydive? Literally, blows all of the other videos out of the water.

This is probably the most violent music video I’ve ever seen. It was like a gun-gasm. It was like a Quentin Tarantino mushed into a music video. Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not opposed to violence. I like Quentin Tarantino movies. As at least those make sense. This? I watched bloody beginning to bloody end and I have no freaking idea what the plot of this thing was. And it’s not like I’m bad at this sort of thing. I’m creative. I have an imagination. But this was a jumbled bloody bucket of what the? With a dash of fangirl baiting gayness thrown in.

Throughout the video, I kept thinking that maybe the scene at the beginning was actually a flash forward? Like the guys banded together to kill the guys who kidnapped and killed the girl? But no? Or maybe the gang found out the identity of the one guy and kidnapped his girlfriend in retribution for killing their other gang members and blackmailed him into killing for them? But then what was going on with that other guy? The only one who lived at the end? So he was always team bad? Although I’m thinking everyone in this video was their own team bad. And since I didn’t know what or who to root for, as I was left adrift in a sea of ‘huh?’, I honestly can’t tell you

And since I didn’t know what or who to root for, as I was left adrift in a sea of ‘huh?’, I honestly can’t tell you about the song. I’m sure there was a song in there besides the opening gregorian chants that had nothing to do with the rest of the song because I remember Bang Yongguk’s growl and going “Yeeeessssssss…..” as Bang Yongguk can do that to me every time. I am not entirely certain that’s a band’s ultimate goal when making a video.

Although, BAP seems to be okay with doing whatever the fudge they want.

LAUGH, I was finishing up this post when I got a message from

SaraG: The new BAP video is horrifying. And I don’t mean because it is too poppy. Just as an FYI
Stephanie: DUUUUUUUDEEEEE I was literally just doing a musical Monday on it. What. The. Fudge
SaraG: And we’re you sad about cute boys with holes in their heads??? So much blood.
Stephanie: What was that? Did it even make sense? I wasn’t sad about shit because I was more “what is going ON???”
SaraG: No sense. Like a shoot em up with no actual plot to follow. And I am a smart plot follower
Stephanie: I feel like they think there is a plot. I know there are going to be lots of people out there analyzing this to death, but I’m a smart plot follower too and….nothing.
SaraG: Yeah, it was a movie with some important scenes edited out to make a music video
Stephanie: I think it was more a “Let’s be cool with guns while we almost make out with each other” I don’t even remember the music! And isn’t that a bad thing? Although I do remember Bang Yonguk shivers
SaraG: And strange choices were made about putting the members against each other and then killing them off. Does the survivor get a solo album?
SaraG: Totally on the Bang Yonguk
Stephanie: I didn’t care about anyone in that video. Were we supposed to be emotionally connected with mopey?
SaraG: Nope. Except maybe the dead fingerless girl. I felt for her
Shitty boyfriend and a shitty death.
Stephanie: Well, if she was tangled up with dumbass she deserved her ending.
SaraG: Maybe he was her brother…..Or cousin or Chingu
Stephanie: True. Then I will allow myself to feel for her
SaraG: Or not. She could have sucked
Stephanie:Ugh. The whole thing. Ugh
SaraG: And I WANTED to like it
Stephanie: Me too! Someone said it was awesome. I now question this someone
SaraG: Maybe on video mute or the dance practice version. But I fear the song is actually generic
Stephanie: I’m going to have to listen to it again, a version that is just the song, but alas, I fear you are right
SaraG: Fingers crossed.

I go back and forth with BAP also. I want them to succeed because of all the ups and downs and road blocks they have encountered. I also have a soft spot for gravelly rappers.

I don’t know all their names and faces, except Zelo and Bang Yongguk, so that also made the plot harder to follow. I am going to watch a few more times, maybe I can find some subs.

Lots of blood and lots of pretty. A lot of money was spent on this video. Lots of special effects and coordinated fight/shootout scenes.

I wonder who is their targeted demographic?

    Thanks for sharing!

I’m with you on this assessment. I could not understand what was going on. It was a 10 minute video. They couldn’t give up a story set up in at least one of those 10 minutes?

At least Super Junior’s Devil MV framed each scenario as if it were a movie trailer, acting out scenes with a femme fatale, or guys double crossing each other for her. Sure, there were lots of text on the MV screen, but it helped me understand what was going on.

But in Skydive, I thought the massacre at the beginning was a flashforward for revenge for the dead girlfriend. Also, I am so over dead girlfriends as motivation. Give her some agency! Again, at least in Devil, the femme fatale was proactive and not bloody victim.

In Skydive they just took various elements of spy thriller (slip in an envelope with victim photos, spill water for secret message, shoot out, shoot out, more shoot out, double crossing, lone survivor who takes off his shirt), filmed them, then randomly strung them together.

For a supposedly gun-less society, kpop has them in spades. As for the mv, just kind of bloody ‘meh’.
