Musical Monday: Parachute

After months of harassing Stephanie with my recommendations and video links, I think that she has decided that it would be best if she redirected my focus onto you, her dear readers, instead of onto her while she is trying to work. Or write. Or read. Or watch. Or live. So, she invited me to sub in for the occasional Musical Monday when she needs a break. Or needs to make me stop bothering her.

I am a music lover. Not the kind that listens to a specific and smart genre. Or the kind that judges other people’s music (too harshly). Or the kind that won’t give most things a chance at least once. I am the kind that hears a voice or a riff or a hook that just sticks with me. I can feel it in my belly and in the hollows of my elbows and knees. I can go back to a song over and over and over and have it affect me the same way every time. There are just certain choice moments that DEMAND I share a song or certain singers that I MUST tell everyone and anyone about (ask Stephanie about Gravity by Niihwa). Oh Hyuk is one of those singers and Parachute is one of those songs.

Oh Hyuk is the frontman for  Hyukoh (see what they did there?), the first band signed onto Tablo’s label HIGHGRND. They are a young and relatively new (2014 debut) indie/art school band that experiments across genres and has proven that they are more interested in making good music than being popular. They are crap at interviews, their videos are anything but flashy, and the only time I have seen them on a variety show (Infinity Challenge) they were painfully shy, quirky, and uncomfortable.

This song is credited to the producer Code Kunst (also on HIGHGRND) and features Oh Hyuk as the singer with a rap section by Dok2 from illionaire (pronounced Dokee…as in ax in Korean…2 is pronounced ‘ee’ in Sino Korean). The entire thing kills me, but there are a few of those stick in my guts moments throughout. Pay particular attention to around 2’48” just after Dok2 finishes up his rap and Oh Hyuk storms in with his raspy vocals. I melt. Every time.

This was in my top 10 songs of 2015. It has such a great groove. I want to drink a glass of scotch in a dark smokey bar or have sex while listening to it. Thank you for covering it!
