This morning I woke up with a sudden, startling urge to find out what happened with Jang Guen Suk. Why did he popped into my head as I hit the snooze button again, trying to ignore the ever approaching reality of having to get out if bed? Why was I so concerned over his whereabouts? No idea. I blame the power that is Monday.
So. As soon as I was settled onto the bus, I set to Googling—because this was a question that stayed with me. Watering the cat— remember when he was so popular he proclaimed himself the Prince of Asia? Brushing my teeth —I tried to convince myself I remembered him heading off for military service. Packing my lunch—remembering he wanted his last drama to bring him back to his (popular) acting roots. Putting on my coat —I wondered if Jackpot was the big success/revival he needed it to be. Leaving the house —realizing that if I had to spend my meager precommute wondering about him, then no, it probably wasn’t the success he was looking for.
So you see where my need to Google came from.
Turns out there are still some very loyal and faithful Jang Guen Suk fans out there as the Wikipedia entry had only been updated hours before, here are random Jang Geun Suk facts which may or may not be interesting to you.
Answer #1 Yes, he is still alive and kicking.
Answer #2 turns out no, he did not begin his military service. Subconscious, please stop trying to convince me of things which are not true.
Answer #3 He was indeed found innocent on the tax evasion charges. (Wonder if he still had to pay that huge mother of a fine. As it was an error done by the management company themselves, I hope they felt bad enough to pick some of that up. Not just because it’s a lot of money they caused but also due to the damage it did to his reputation and the fact that it effectively stalled his comeback.)
Answer #4 Daebak was not the huge or even moderate success he hoped it would be. I know nowadays expectations for ratings have dropped with the rise of online viewing and cable networks, but Daebak never broke double digits, the best night being the finale which came in at a 9%.
Answer #5 did you know he released a cookbook? No way! It had about 20 recipes, some essays, and photos he took. (Which of course makes me think of Love Rain.)
Answer #6 His music as Team H is actually a lot more popular than I had anticipated. Or it’s huge in Japan, which shouldn’t be a super surprise considering how popular he is there. As I actually really like Team H, this news makes me happy. It sold tons, was on the top of the charts, and he and Big Brother had a bunch of stadium concerts.
Answer #7 He was appointed a visiting professor at Hanyang University and did a few special lectures. I’m guessing on acting? But turns out, what do I know?
Answer #8 He was on a tvN variety show that I had never heard about called My Heart’s Candy for 10 weeks. Apparently, this is a show where a star talks to another unknown star on the phone? Sounds riveting. *ahem*
Answer #9 Apparently, he’s being heckled for some weight gain he’s been experiencing lately. Uncool netizens, uncool. Although, is it me or does he now look more like Roy Kim?
Answer #10 Okay. I have no 10. But I couldn’t leave the list at 9. Couldn’t do it guys, couldn’t do it.
So, in conclusion, Subconscious. Jang Geun Seuk seems to be doing okay. He hasn’t risen back to the top, the Prince of Asia top as he’d been hoping would happen in 2016, but he seems to keep plugging along. I guess that’s all we can ask.
This very important Jang Geun Seuk has been brought to you by a very ridiculous me. Over and out.
