Hong Sisters Long Awaited Return

Casting News

The Hong Sisters have been gone for so long they could have been featured on “What’s Happening With…”. For regular writers, a year or two off would be no big thing, but for the Hong Sisters? The writing pair where for years, they came out big hit after big hit each consecutive year? Their silence has been noticed.

After all this time, they’re coming back with a new drama called Hwayugi, scheduled to come out by the end of the year on tvN.

I’d think that tvN would be an odd choice for the pair, considering their popularity, but, 1) tvN has shown it’s really able to hold it’s own now against the major networks and 2) it has been a while for the Hong Sisters, not only in terms of having a drama out, but after their last drama Warm and Cozy, it’s been  while since they’ve had a huge hit.

With this drama, they are attempting to go big, both in terms of plot and casting. The story is a contemporary retelling of the Chinese tale Journey To the West, with mythical beings and, you know, the usual good vs evil.

While the Hong Sisters dramas are hit or miss for me, the casting or potential casting for this drama, is really the lure for me. Right now, the show is courting Park Bo Gum as the lead, the same Park Bo Gum I came to love-love-love in Moonlight Drawn By Couds. Woohoo! Yep, that Park Bo Gum. Also interesting, they are attempting to sign Cha Seung Won on as another character. As Cha Seung Won starred in Greatest Love which was not only written by the Hong Sisters, but is using the same director, I’m thinking their chances of getting him are pretty good. Although, would he be okay with the downgrade from lead to side character–no matter how important the side character? It’s a valid question.

Whatever the case, I, as I’m sure lots of other people as it is the Hong Sisters and people always have high expectations of the pair, will be keeping my eye out for this drama.

I am really excited about this one. I love the Hong Sisters (when they hit a good one it’s really fun and enjoyable), I like Park Bo Gum AND I love TvN. Also, retelling a classic like Journey To the West, sounds really interesting.
I hope my enthusiasm doesn’t lead to my disappointment, but either way I haven’t been this excited about an upcoming drama in awhile. So, I may just revel in the anticipation a little. 😉

I was going to say who doesn’t like Park Bo Gum, but I have some friends, who shall remain nameless, who call him Dead Eyes.
