I’m back! I’m back!
And I swear to all that is good and pure that I missed some of the best songs of the summer while I was away. I did have wireless at some of our Airbnb’s, but even then it was slow and shady at best. Despite my lovely friends’ best efforts, I didn’t really keep in the loop beyond the occasional gif that finally loaded and my iTunes recommended playlist that pops up every Friday. It was dismal. I had to listen to music I had downloaded prior to leaving Colorado. Some of that stuff is weeks old, years even. (I am being dramatic here, I downloaded heaps of songs I love and was perfectly happy with my choices.)
Something I did suffer through the slow internet for was the MV for Bang Yong Guk’s release Yamazaki. How could I not? For real, that man is something more than special. They need a new word to describe him. I have yet to meet someone that has said: “Eh, he’s hard on the eyes and his voice is grating.” Even my husband dealt with the buffering to watch him in his shirtless and tattooed glory, and he doesn’t even know who Bang is.
It is my understanding the song Yamazaki, composed and written by Bang, is to be part of a larger mixtape, but the only song I’ve heard so far is this one. It’s stunning. I don’t want to read too much into the lyrics as I obviously don’t know Bang’s motivations or inspirations behind it, but it could easily be seen as a pushback against some of what he’s been dealing with in terms of mental health. It seems like a young man’s response to leading a pretty controlled life. It’s all ‘I won’t take the drugs you want me to take, but I’ll drink until I’m F’d up every night cause I’m young. I haven’t lost my swag.’ That’s fairly blatant. I don’t think I’m reading too much into it. And it’s true…the part where he hasn’t lost his swag. The beat, the flow of the lyrics, it’s all good. Like really good.
Just as a heads up, as if the title of this post and the warning at the start of the video were not enough, this video is rated R. I assume it’s because of the lyrics, the somewhat graphic violence against pigs and chickens, and maybe the implied and actually referenced gangster stuff (these people have…gasp…tattoos!). I kept waiting and waiting for Bang to have a little bit of sexy time with some of the ladies in the video, but it didn’t happen. That made me a little sad. But just a little. The actual song made up for it. As soon as I can get a legit copy to keep for my very own, I will drop the cash.
Did you miss me?
