New on the Scene: TopSecret

KPop School/ Music

The entire reason you are getting TopSecret as the rookie group this week is because I woke up yesterday with their song “Mind Control” rattling around in my head.  It’s an ear-worm of a summer bop, and I apologize in advance for it getting stuck in your head too.

TopSecret debuted on January 4, 2017, under JSL Company. They’re a 7 member group consisting of: Ain, K, Yohan, Wooyoung, Junghoon, Yonghyeon, and Kyeongha, who range in age from 18 to 26.

For a rookie group from a small company they’ve been pretty busy, already putting out three MVs.   Now, they’re not all great, but the one good one makes up for it. Lets start with the awesome. “Mind Control,” their second release, is a package of pure pop perfection.  The concept is really fun and goes well with the bouncy, cheerleader-like anthem. You get a lot of their personality, a good look at everyone’s faces (Hey, that’s important!), and the dancing is interesting.

I knew I might be in trouble when the pink-haired maknae, Kyeongha, bites his lip while committing mischief.

As cute and fun as the main video is, the dance version is almost better.  I am a sucker for the dance versions and this one is totally worth watching because you don’t get very much of the dancing in the main MV.  The choreo is fantastic – sharp with lots of unique things going on – so it never gets boring to watch.  The styling is also much better.  I am fascinated by Yohan and his weird cropped orange sweater.

Mr. Red Letter Sweater (Junghoon)’s shoelace comes untied about halfway through and adds a layer of suspense.

“She” has a bit of a slow start, so give it till the middle – about 1:45 – before you give up on it.  It picks up steam and… coolness?  Cool is probably not what this really is, but it gets better in the second half.  I’m not going to spend money on it, but if it comes up on a playlist I won’t skip it.  The video is all soft Instagram filters and cotton candy at first, but then gets kinda fun and the music does the same.  I liken it to one of those mass made desserts you get at a chain restaurant – too sweet, but you can’t stop eating it.

These boys have really pretty eyes.  Seriously.

I am not a fan of “Yesman.”  I find it boring and the chorus is irritating.  And the video is more of the same soft filter but with “street” styling, which I find weird.  Does everybody have acne or something they’re trying to hide?  I’m sorry TopSecret but this is a hard pass.

See!  There are things I don’t like.  Come on JSL, you can do better for the boys than this.   So, overall, a mixed bag.  They’re not on my To Be Stanned list but I’ll keep an eye on them based on “Mind Control.”
