In news that is sure to make my friends and ultimate Running Man fans, The McFeeleys do a dance of happy, there be a new show brewin’ on the interweb. Why will they be excited? Not only is will this show feature some of their favorite variety show people — Lee Kwang Soo and Yoo Jae Suk, it is also a show planned, right from the start, for Netflix. So many places to start with this news! All of it possibly very exciting.
First off, let’s jump into the Netflix portion of the equation. Netflix and Kdrama certainly seem to be hooking up on the regular now it seems. There are many hypotheses as to why this is happening, but the one that makes the most amount of sense to me is that with the ban on a lot of Korean entertainment in China (and quite often Japan), the broadcast networks are looking to expand their ways to turn a buck. Ie, spreading to countries they didn’t really put a lot of effort into (like the Americas where they were simply content with leasing out their product to companies like DramaFever and Viki) now when times are tough, they probably figure “Why not cut out the middle man?”. They create their own streaming site here in the states, make Viki (and possibly DramaFever) forge new deals or find their range limited to the cable networks and content from other countries. They make their own deals with Netflix to carry their product and, one step further, create new programming directly for the line. While I do worry what this will do for the likes of DramaFever and Viki and those who work there, as a watcher, do we really care where they come from so long as they get in our bellies? Especially if there’s a possibility of more content, legally subbed, faster? Gotta say win-win.
That covered, let’s move onto the next bit.
Kwang Soo? Yoo Jae Suk? In a new tv show together? Yeah, McFeeley’s are gonna flip their lids. I’m not 100% certain, but I’m going to say that the Daesung part of it might get them excited about it too. As he’s been a frequent visitor to the show, and with Jr. McFeeley’s new obsession with Kpop, they totally know who he is and with Daesung to know is to love. Or to at least look fondly upon. He’s funny and he’s proven himself to be good at variety shows. Plus, as he’s been on shows with the two of them before, they already have an established chemistry. Which, in variety shows count for a lot.
Add that to the fact that the director is the same one who led them in those previous shows, (X-Men and Family Outing)? He has already proven himself to be a hit show maker, and again already knows the ins and outs of this cast. (Okay, so technically Kwangsoo wasn’t on those two shows with them, but Kwang Soo is a variety master and probably needs very little help in being charming and good at his job.
The McFeeleys’ will, of course, have other questions. Who is the girl? Although, as it is Park Min Young, star of many hit dramas, I’m guessing she’s probably been on Running Man a few times, so they might already know the answer to that. While I don’t know how she’d do on variety programming, she has held her own as the spunky lead in many a drama so maybe that’s rubbed off on her and she’d be a bold addition to the group. No, she won’t be a Ji Hyo, but who is? ANd the other guy? I think he’s an actor. Let’s go see. Yep, he’s an actor.
The casting isn’t set in stone yet, so there could still be some wiggle, but I can’t imagine they’d name the big names without getting something written down. Although, who am I kidding? This is Korean entertainment. They like to do the very opposite of that.
There also isn’t much out there about the plot of the show, with the exception of saying it’s supposed to be some sort of mystery set up every episode. Hmm…that could be so much. Depending on where you read the news, it looks like this show will have a definite season to it, the first being about 10 episodes, which makes sense as Netflix isn’t going to just sign up for an endless variety show, no matter who they snag to star in it.
You better believe I’ll be keeping an eye out for this one and if I get more information, I’ll let you know!
