Back From Wence They Came

Casting News

When we do all those, What’s Happening With… posts, we wonder well, what’s happening with those actors, actresses, and musicians that drifted off our radar. It’s funny when, all of a sudden, they start popping back up in bunches. This particular week, we have three of them coming out from their little holes to either sign on or contemplate new dramas, Yoon Eun Hye, Jang Geun Suk, and Lee Jia!

First off, let’s talk about a confirmed casting, Lee Jia who has signed onto the tvN drama, My Ahjussi. This actually surprised me, not so much the casting, which did surprise me because her dramas are pretty spaced out, but because she plays the hero’s (Lee Seung Gyun) wife. Hmm… I though this drama was essentially a romance between his character and IU. The original plotting news made me want to take a big fat pass on this drama. It only seems fair, I really dislike noona romances, so in turn I have to turn my nose up to ahjussi romances. Plus there’s the whole, I really can not see Lee Seung Gyun and IU together. Perhaps, with this new casting news, it will end up something like Coffee Prince where he has the flirtation with the younger girl but finds his way back in the long run.

While I’m not entirely certain I’ll watch this drama, I did really love her in Me Too, Flower! and I would like to see her in something else. Alas, she seems to take joy in dramas that I don’t want to watch. Or, Athena? Has anyone seen Athena? Is that worth a go? I do like a lot of the actors in that.

Next up, we’ve got, speaking of Coffee Prince, Yoon Eun Hye, who has been MIA from the tv screen for 4 years. Can you believe it? It’s been FOUR years since Mi Rae’s Choice. That’s like at least 10 in Kdrama years. (We should work out the exact math on that.) Now Yoon Eun Hye coming back to TV is a little trickier due to the scandal that drove her away (plagiarism allegations during a fashion competition show), as it’s hard to come back from a big scandal, but it’s been years, and maybe this is her chance.

I do like her as an actress, and I’d be interested in seeing her again.  The drama, Love Like A Person is one of theme of the year dramas which is, oddly, robot/human romances. Side note…how did this become a thing? How will this exactly work? Are they literal or figurative robots? No idea. This will require more research on my part.

Its too soon to tell if she’ll take the role, but I’m going to keep an eye out, not just because of the robots, but because I’m interested to see if she’s ready to take on another drama…or if she thinks the Korean public is ready for her to take on another drama.

Lastly, and probably the one I’m the most excited for is the possible casting of Jang Geun Seuk! It’s been so long since he’s been in a drama, I’m fairly certain his last one was Pretty Man (hmm… that one was with IU, who’s starring with Lee Seung Gyun with Lee Jia, who was also in Coffee Prince with Yoon Eun Hye! All our people today are connected. Isn’t that fun?). Unfortunately, he was also taken out by a scandal (tax evasion that he was cleared of), but I don’t know about you guys, but I’m ready to see him in a drama again! I loved him in You’re Beautiful, I loved him in Love Rain, he is such a good actor and he needs to get back on the acting horse again. (Preferably not in a dram like Pretty Man.) In Operation King he would play a con man turned prosecutor, which, I don’t know about you guys, but I think he could totally pull this off.

All I can say is, welcome back guys! (Hopefully!)

Jang Geun Seuk was in the Royal Gambler in 2016…I haven’t seen it but I heard mixed reviews. I do so adore him.
