Musical Monday – Comeback, Return

Posted by SaraG on January 29, 2018

As mentioned last week, Ikon returned!! Now I’ve made it very clear that though there are Ikon songs I love, love, love, they’re not one of those bands that I’m inclined to be biased toward right out of the gate. Though I recognize their talent and hard work, we just aren’t soulmates. It’s ok, it’s cool. I can’t be soulmates with everyone. I’ve learned to accept that. But that doesn’t mean that I can’t thoroughly enjoy something they do while still having the freedom to constructively provide some feedback on their stuff when we get together for cocktails. By we, I mean the group and me…we are often found getting cocktails on a Friday afternoon.

I’m just not starstruck, I’m a lover of music.

Their new full album came out on Thursday and the countdown, first by day and then by hour, was pretty serious for a couple of my VIP girlfriends. I don’t know if you recall, but Alix and KpopontheDL are fully invested in the wellbeing of those seven men. One of them, and I’m not saying any names here, demanded that we not react to the album to each other until we’d all had a chance to hear it…unless we were in love with the album and then we could react…except not reacting meant we weren’t in love so…whatever. It was all very complicated.

But she was worrying for no reason. The album, ‘Return’, is good. It’s really, really good. Is it all my style? Nope. Am I going to run out and join the fan club and hang posters in my bedroom? Not gonna happen. But that hasn’t happened for the groups that I legit feel weak in the knees for. What I can say, is that the album is pretty high quality from the first song through the twelfth. There are few songs that I would consider filler, but even those aren’t terrible. I’ve listened to the whole darned thing multiple times through and I rarely do that…so it’s saying a lot.

The title track, the one with the MV, is Love Scenario. It’s kind of a poppy little number that honestly sounds a bit, not generic, but safe. It’s a good listen, but it didn’t blow me away. Great for a playlist, not for getting me all worked up. The link to the MV is below…I feel like it’s one of those songs that someone is going to fall for hard and be kinda of mad at me for not totally ‘getting it”, and that makes me happy. That kind of conflict feeds my soul. I love when people love their music with that level of intensity.

B.I. (Hanbin) has a solo track called One and Only that’s a pretty decent pop/hip hop/rap track. I like it a ton and frankly, it’s sexy. A lot of what he does is sexy. But I have to say, one of my favorite songs on the album is surprising even to me. I am a bit smitten over the first 21 seconds of  Hug Me to the point where I kind of ignore the 30 seconds of generic rap that follows it up. The rest of the song is solid and I think it’s my second fav on the album. Maybe. I am absolutely in LOVE with the song Just Go. I suppose it’s not that far off from some of the other stuff I’m into (I’m looking at you South Club) but it’s not in my typical wheelhouse. I don’t know what it is, but it’s the only track I’ve repeated over and over. I seriously can’t pick out a single thing about it that bothers me. It’s the perfect emo-pop song. And I’m feeling emo right now.

So overall, the album is solid. I won’t mock any of my friends that may have ‘accidentally’ purchased both versions on pre-order. I won’t give anyone a hard time for being so solidly in the Ikon camp. I’m super pleased that I don’t have to be displeased.

Love Scenario, Ikon
