Please forgive me, but this will be the first in a string of Throwback’s all from 2016 and frankly, this is the perfect song to kick it off. In just a few days, I’ll be heading off to South Korea with three of the loves of my life (not my kids and spouse, who also get this title, of course) and I am over the moon with anticipation. The last time I was there, it was 2016 and I was young and naive and still looked at the world through rose-colored glasses (lies, I’m basically the same) and in my more senior years, I look back on those days with fondness. One might say that I’m a little…sentimental for that time.
See what I did there?
The last album that Winner put out as a five-member group, EXIT: E happened very shortly before Nam Tae Hyun’s departure. It’s an EP with five songs..several of which are solidly some of my favorite Winner tunes spanning an array of emotions and sounds. Looking back, knowing what we know now, it’s really a shame that it was only an EP. It might not have been a great fit for NTH at YG or in an idol group, but he was making some phenomenal music with these guys and with Mino in particular. It saddens me that we will likely never have that again.
Sentimental is a solid pop song, but it’s written in a minor key, so despite it being upbeat and danceable, it makes the listener feel just a little more. It makes me just a little nostalgic without even really knowing what the lyrics mean. My heart feels just a little bit sad when I listen to it. The MV is an interesting concept, tracking the members through a house from an aerial vantage point. The colors are bight but washed out and the styling is fun. There’s a bathtub.
