I’ve been in a strange place with music in the last couple of weeks – in part because of all of the stuff I talked about in strange last Thursday’s post, but also because things have been intensely busy at work and at home and I haven’t had a lot of time to turn on the tunes let alone focus on it the way I’m accustomed to doing. I find myself listening to a few bars of a new song, tucking it away on a playlist to listen to more later, and going back in for a comfort listen to something that has already made its way into the fabric of my life.
This makes me sad because I’m missing stuff that I would normally be all over and I’m not giving myself the space and time to be excited about comebacks prior to release. I don’t even know they’re coming. Hash Swan’s new EP Peridot is a prime example of that. I love Hash Swan. I once actually got annoyed with my friends because they weren’t as excited as I wanted them to be when he had a comeback (I have never claimed to be anything other than a bit petty). I find his nasal whine to be entirely captivating. He’s wildly talented and unique and distinctive and I love him and I MISSED THAT HE HAD NEW EP.
The song Arrow on the EP is so different from what he normally puts out and it’s absolutely gorgeous. It has the type of melody that reminds you that hip hop artists are just that, artists. They know how to use music and lyrics and rhythm and tone to make you feel things. They just also look insanely cool doing it.
