Throwback (Musical) Thursday – Bring on the Retro

There’s all this talk all over the place about how we’re moving into the new roaring twenties. Now there are lots of things that I don’t want to see come back – segregation, prohibition (shiver), and women getting the short end of the stick (even more so than now) for example – but there are some pretty cool stylistic things I wouldn’t mind seeing Kpop getting their hands on. Could you just imagine what some of the artists we love would do with brass instruments, jazz choreography, and those clothes? It might be super interesting to see ATEEZ or Stray Kids move on from pirates or dystopia into gangsters and speakeasies.

I do admit though, we have seen some artists stick their toes into the deep wells of the relatively unexplored twenties – I’m looking at you TVXQ – but there is so much more there to play around with and I’d love to see the concepts that could come out of it. The suits and dresses alone could cause my early demise. So beautiful.

In the midst of trying to take over the western market, the Wonder Girls put out the song Nobody in both English and Korean. It’s a fun romp that includes locking JYP up in a bathroom and letting the women take the front stage. It isn’t strictly twenties, obviously, but the women’s styling and some of the sounds are definitely influenced by those older days. Such an amazing song.

What are you looking forward to in the next decade? What do you want to see and hear brought back from the past and remixed?

Nobody, Wonder Girls
