Throwback (Musical) Thursday – Friend to Fan

Music

I’m a people lover. You have to work pretty hard or have something pretty special going on for me to actively dislike you. But just because I like you as a person doesn’t mean I’m your biggest fan or anything. I can fully support an artist in doing what they want to do and not actually want to listen to their songs. Just sitting here typing this post, I can think of a few Kchat favs that while I adore them, aren’t up my alley. That being said, I always give new releases a chance because people grow and change and their music typically follows along after them. I think I’ve even written about that phenomenon on the site before.

Eric Nam has to 100% be one of my favorite MCs in Kpop. I don’t just love him because he’s a person that hasn’t done anything wrong, he’s charming, witty, self-aware, and self-deprecating in a way that doesn’t hide his self-confidence. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him in person at Kcon and online in a million different formats – from a casual convo with fellow US east coaster PH-1 to hosting a bilingual chat show to navigating the relatively uncharted waters of an online musical festival. While he handles challenging situations with grace, he’s also honest about the work that goes into this type of job. People really seem to love working with him. This speaks volumes.

But everyone knows, while he has steady work as a host and interviewer, Eric Nam is a singer. He’s a performer. For years, despite my enjoying him as a person, I wasn’t super fond of his music. It’s not bad, it’s just wasn’t my thing. Not really at all. I can’t put my finger on why, but that’s cool, he seemed to be doing alright without me. Then, in 2018, he put out a song and MV that, quite frankly, marked a turning point in my understanding of where he’s coming from musically. Potion, the Latin influenced R&B song featuring Woodie Gochild is fabulous. It works so well on so many levels. After that song, I’ve pretty consistently liked everything he’s released. So while I can say that I got behind Eric because he seems to be a pretty great person, I became a fan because he’s doing some pretty great tunes.

Potion, Eric Nam
