One of the reasons I love Kpop so much is how connected I feel to the artists even though they are half a world away, from a very different culture and often, a completely different generation. A very large portion of the idol job is to be accessible to the fans, to connect with them through a myriad of platforms, and to make each and every one of them feel special. When you fall in love with an artist or group, you, whether intentionally or not, adopt the name of their fandom as your own. Each time they call out to this mass of adoring fans, they’re speaking directly to you. They’re letting you know, in no uncertain terms, that they love you and they miss you and they couldn’t do any of this without you. Being able to call out a name – your name now – is key to making it all seem unbelievably personal and real.
But it goes both ways, I mean, as fans we work our butts off to learn groups – their names, personalities, group history, individual backgrounds – we want to know them because we understand that they want to be known. Just a few weeks ago I wrote a post about ONF and their song Moscow Moscow because I was missing them and feeling them in the moment. They are an incredibly underrated group that deserves a hell of a lot more attention and affection…and then the teasers started coming out for their next comeback – a full album. I am incredibly excited about this. The images and song highlights are right up in their futuristic concept, the songs promise to use their absolutely gorgeous voices to the fullest effect, and as always, they are primed for razor-sharp choreo and stunning visuals. And, as a bonus to those of us counting down the days as well as something a little special for folks maybe just starting to be interested in their talent, they dropped the most glorious prerelease and MV.
My Name is an adorable introduction to each of the members. In turn, they share their name, role in the group, and a few details about their own personalities and quirks. Just like that, one right after the other, they do a musical self-introduction wrapped up in the most darling chorus. If I wasn’t 9/10ths of the way in love with them already, this would have kicked-started those engines without fail. For crying out loud, we learn who gets hangry, who hates cucumbers, who is Mr. fashion, that Wyatt is desperate to be closer to MK, and that U understands that he looks old but he’s really just the sweetest maknae. So many details. So much fun.
And the song is fab too.
