NEW KOREAN BL ALERT! This is post is many things, an announcement of a new show, the announcement of a teaser being released, and a late addition to the June BL and Bubbles list as it appears that this new Korean show, Light On Me is currently scheduled to premiere at the end of the month.

Whew. That’s a lot for one post.

This show is actually a live-action adaptation of a popular mobile game called Saebit’s Boy Highschool Council. Dude. Are there BL games out there that someone didn’t tell me about? How am I the last to know about these things? Though, in all honesty, I think I’d be too embarrassed for myself to actually play if they did have one.

I want to say that we don’t get a lot of High School BL, most of them living now in the world of adults, almost adults, or college students, but there are some of them out there. Korea itself had Where Your Eyes Linger, their first BL series and last year’s Color Rush. Though, I’ll have to admit neither of those shows appear up very high on my like list. Thailand also has a few out there, Second Chance is one we’re ‘currently’ watching, there was also Gen Y with its high school characters. If I try thinking of recent ones really hard, I could come up with a few more, but again, nothing that’s high on my love list. I think I’m solidly a College/Post College drama lover. I want to say it’s more believable, more realistic, but it could just be that there are about 65% less poop jokes in older dramas.

I don’t have a lot of standards but the ones I do have…

Anyway, I do love the quality of the Korean BLs. They usually have a high production value and a pretty decent story. While I haven’t watched the last one yet, the historical, I’ve seen all the others and can say that they just keep getting better and better. Looking at the teaser for Light On Me, it looks like it has a hetero drama production value, which is greatly appreciated. It also looks like there just might be a love triangle built in the storyline, which we all know is a staple to the Korean drama. Or, if you throw in the girl (here’s hoping she’s better written than Thai or Filipino BL female characters) it could just end up a love square.

Let’s take a look at the synopsis, I have one from MyDramaList:

A high-teen romance about Woo Tae Kyung, who joined the Saebit Boys High School Council to make friends, meeting his first love there. Woo Tae Kyung, who is blunt and straightforward, is entangled with Noh Shin Woo, who is cold outside but warm inside, Shin Da Won, the most popular student president of the school, and Nam Gung Shion, the mood maker, and depicts friendship and love.

And an expanded one from BLUpdate2020 on Instagram as I think it gives more insight to the show and helps the trailer make more sense:

Tae Kyung (Lee Sae On) is an 18-year-old high school student. He is also a lifelong loner. But one day, he starts questioning his own judgment and tells a teacher that he no longer wishes to go it alone. The problem is, he has no idea how to start going about making new friends. The teacher advises him to join the school’s student council. He agrees, but discovers that making friends may be harder than it seems.

He meets the Vice President of the council, Shin Woo (Kang You Seok), who is cool and level-headed, but also somewhat cold toward him and reluctant to accept Tae Kyung. However, he also meets the super-attractive President of the council: Da On (Choi Chan Yi), who appears to take an instant shine to him. The beginnings of a romance appear to be in the cards for Da On and Tae Kyung, but Shin Woo does not seem to approve. Matters are further complicated by the fact that Da On’s close female friend – who secretly loves Da On – is jealous of their closeness, and attempts to drive a wedge between them!

While, as I said, I don’t super love the high school storylines, this looks like it will be a lot of fun! This time the show will be 16 episodes, which seems a little longer than the other Korean BL’s out there. Could it be that we are getting our first taste of a full drama? Usually, the shows are clearly a movie that was chopped up for episodic consumption, but maybe that’s not the case here. Even if this isn’t the one, I’m very certain it’s only a matter of time before Korea catches up to Thailand, Philippines, or Taiwan in their BL content. I mean, they have GOT to see just how popular this stuff is and will go “We want a piece of that.”

Finally, there is a teaser, but it’s not on an official channel so I’m tacking it onto the end of the post as I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before the video doesn’t work anymore. Production Guys, create a channel, release your stuff. We’ll come to the official sites/channels if you just give us a chance! What’s the harm?

Anyway, I’m cautiously excited about this new show!
