Monday’s post got me thinking about summer music and what I think of as the perfect summer song. That is a hugely complicated question as more than the season goes into creating the ideal tune for a specific moment, but summer songs are distinct in Kpop. There’s just something about them that makes them so absolutely suited for the heat, swimsuits, cookouts, and convertibles.
I will 1000% never be able to choose the winner of the perfect summer song pageant, but I have an absolute ton of potentials to include several by our lovely rapper from Ikon, Bobby. There is just something about his style and aesthetic that screams 80+ degrees and scorching sunshine. He is red hot and we all get to bask in the glow of it all.
I Love You is the title track of Bobby’s 2017 solo album Love and Fall. While the sound is bright and summery, the lyrics and the MV both really kind of show the fleeting thrill of summer romance – It’s not just ‘I love you’, It’s ‘I still love you’ and ‘goodbye my love’. It’s the bitter-sweet moments in August, right before real life starts again when you are so entranced with the last moments of heat and freedom the summer offers. I mean, not now, not as an adult who works all year round and whose responsibilities never really seem to end. But I still very much remember all of that from my youth. I still get super melancholic in September as if I’m heading back to campus and leaving my summer love behind. That’s what this song feels like to me. It feels like enjoying the hell out of something as hard as I can while knowing that it’s almost done.
And that, my friends, is the reality of summer. Love it or hate it, it’s fleeting.
Honestly, though, I prefer autumn.
I Love You, Bobby
