Talk about a blast from my Kdrama past! Or a lot of our Kdrama pasts. Jang Geun Suk one of my first certified k-crushes after seeing that double ponytail in You’re Beautiful. I followed him to movies and then to Love Rain where he was swoony, angst-ridden and beautiful. But then… he just kind of fell off our radars. He did that double identity one before he went off to the military and then… has he done anything since he’s gotten out? I don’t think so. But that just makes it all the more exciting when I found out that he’s in talks to join up with a new drama!
As he was once considered a drama powerhouse, it surprised me a bit that he’s fallen off the radar. I’m guessing since there were no huge scandals, its probably of his own choice, which, hey, if that’s what you want, then good for you. (Side note: I just checked and he hasn’t acted since 2018, before he went to the military.)
While some places have him already signed onto this new show, I haven’t been able to get confirmation that he’s doing anything more than considering the new show. Which is good and bad. His name is still out there (good). This could all just be a rumor and not an actual casting (bad.) The show is called Accidental Country Diary and is based on a web novel. The synopsis for the show gives me super cute vibes:
Han Ji Yool works as a veterinarian in Seoul. One day, he receives a phone call from his grandfather. His grandfather doesn’t mention specifics, but his voice sounds serious. Han Ji Yool decides to go to Heedong Village, where his grandfather lives and runs an animal clinic. There, Han Ji Yool meets police officer Ahn Ja Young. It turns out his grandfather is actually touring Europe. According to the note left by his grandfather, Han Ji Yool has to take over his grandfather’s animal clinic for a half year, while his grandfather is away.
Even when Ahn Ja Young was preparing for her test to become a police officer, she wanted to work as a police officer in Heedong Village, where she grew up. She is usually the first one to appear and provide help to residents in need. She helps Han Ji Yool solve inconveniences related to his daily life in the village and they develop a romantic relationship.
Jang Geun Suk as a veterinarian? He’s probably all cranky and fish out of water having to cover for his missing grandfather? Having to take care of not the fancy pets of Seoul, but the farm animals who also populate a village? This fish out of water falling for someone super confident and secure in her life? Who helps him through his trials of small-town living? Where do we petition for this show to happen? Can we throw some money at Jang Geun Suk to sweeten the pot? I’d dig into those couch cushions for something like that.
Since the show is still in casting territory, currently Sooyoung (Girls Generation) is in talks to play the policewoman, and neither side confirming anything, it’s going to be a long while before this comes out. but we’re going to keep an eye out for this thing, keep it on our radars, and keep our fingers crossed until someone gets locked down as the lead! I’d like to say I’d be as interested in the show if Jang Geun Suk doesn’t sign on, but that’s probably a lie. My ten-year kdrama watching anniversary is coming up real quick and I’m really feeling some nostalgic vibes, this would fit in nicely!

I read somewhere that Jang Geun Suk had some tax problems – or at least because his manager/accountant didn’t file something, he did – and he left a reality show that he was preparing to be a part of. That is probably why he’s been out of acting for a while. Not even really his problem but netizens gave him a hard time about it. Kind of a bummer. But at least, a vet character will have lots of cute animals around!
