There is no denying that Kpop is just as much a visual art as it is musical. Idols aren’t idols because they have talent for performing music, they are idols because they are genuinely multi-talented and blessed with amazing looks. It’s not a coincidence that so many of them are into fashion or reforming clothes or painting or what have you. They are artistic people, not factory made pop products. This is never so apparent as when they bless us with side projects and dance or vocal covers. And when our favs collaborate with an artist with different expertise, we are drawn into an even better understanding of what might be inspiring and motivating them in the moment.
Last week, Doyoung and Haechan, from various iterations of NCT including this version of NCT U, deemed us all worthy enough to receive the product of their collaboration with producer Ryan Jhun, Maniac. The song is a rhythmic, upbeat little number lending lots of opportunity for the fabulous choreography and stunning styling of the real star of the show, Lia Kim. If you aren’t familiar with her, Lia Kim is a dancer, choreographer, and the CEO/Co-founder of the oft-discussed 1Million Dance Studio – where she also serves as a trainer/teacher. She has worked with everyone from newly debuted A.C.E to solo Taemin. The woman is a force, a recognized and celebrated talent, and someone we should ALL be thankful to for what she has done for us throughout the years.
I’d say more, going on and on about how I want to be her best friend and/or lover or how I would pay a shocking amount of money to see her perform live, but instead, I will cut this short and let you enjoy the new MV. It’s incredibly fun and absolutely a joy.
