We often think and talk about the maknae of the group as the very youngest member, but in groups of a particular size, when the youngest are all clumped together in a birth year, that’s not really the case. In fact, there’s often a whole line of members filling this role and while the last born might take the brunt of the responsibility, the others aren’t exactly smooshed into the hyung position. Especially when the group is as close as our beloved Pentagon.
Being the maknae, as has been proven time and again in Kpop, does not in any way mean you are the least experienced musically or the least knowledgeable about how to pull together a catchy little tune. In fact, there’s a long history of the youngest having the most sensibility or interest in the production of music. It’s not rare. This past week, the maknae line in Penta – Kino, Yuto, and Wooseok – released the song and MV Cerberus produced by them in partnership with chAN ‘s of Gamsung Sound with the lyrics written by the young men themselves.
In an interview about the song, the members say that the lyrics compare them to the three-headed guardian of hell. They use the MV to depict themselves as three different types of villains, the naughty one, the handsome one, and the devil, traipsing through their horrible deeds decked out in Penta’s fav eclectic styling, heavy eye makeup, and plenty of accessories. Love. If I didn’t know them so well, I could also believe they had an evil bone in their bodies. But alas, we’ve been loving on these men since they were boys and we know them all too well. Talented marshmallows, the lot of them.
