Asian LGBT Drama/Movie List

On these pages, we have a fairly comprehensive list of LGBT Asian movies and dramas. Well, all the ones that we could find as, let me tell you, it’s not an easy task! But we’ve had the question many a time, so I’ve striven to find all the ones I can. Below are links to pages of LGBT content lists separated into countries, where you’ll find the name of the movie/drama, the release date, synopsis, and when possible, a little key as to what you can expect. For example, it will list whether it is a drama or movie (or movie short), whether it can be listed as gay, lesbian, or trans, whether the plotline in question is the main point of the movie (be it romantic or just issues based) or if it’s just a side character, and finally, for those of you out there looking of these types of titles, there are soooo many of them which end horribly (we’re not just talking heartbreak here), so when possible we’ve put in a little hint.

Disclaimer: A title showing up in this list is, in no way, an endorsement. Most of these I’ve found by research and have not actually seen myself. (Many of them being not available online, or translated online.) So if a title ends up being of poor quality, don’t blame the messenger, this page is just a resource. When possible, if I have seen the title, I will put in a little line or two reviews to give you a further heads up.

Anyway, I hope you like it! And when you come across ones I’ve missed (because we know there will be), please give me the information in a comment, and we’ll add it in!

You missed a few (all of these are from Thailand):
    1) Thai series “Tomorrow I’ll Still Love You” (2009) with Oh Anuchyd and Fluke Pachara as the two boys in love. Here’s a fan-made teaser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hq1TWrcksS0. You can download the entire here: https://app.box.com/s/qf97pcp5m4pfbfibk9ju
and the subtitles are here: https://app.box.com/s/1xm4hmuiotpkx86vqxpy
    2) Thai mini-series Club Friday2: Hack & Choke, you can download it here: http://www.kudalakorn.com/reupload-eng-sub-club-friday-2/
    3) Thai mini series Club Friday3: Your Love, His Love and Our Love. I couldn’t find it anywhere, but here’s a music video which shows some scenes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09WacueH9o4&index
    4) A very old one from 2005,Varieties of Love (Love 8009). You can download it here: https://app.box.com/s/zcxciyngqbuflqnde3dm
    5) Club Friday5: Secret of a Heart that Doesn’t Exist. I couldn’t find the mini-series, but here are a few teasers from Kudalakorn’s blog: http://www.kudalakorn.com/eng-sub-club-friday-5-teaser/

Thanks for the additions! I completely forgot about those Club Fridays. Do any of them end happily? I heard no. Is the first one any good?

Uncontrolled love 2 has a happy ending and you can find it with English subs if you look it up on YouTube. The ending is so cute and I like it way better than the horrible other ending (sorry I couldn’t figure out how to comment otherwise so I just replied to another’s comment)

For Sotus you can watch it on Dailymotion with English subtitles

Sorry, can’t figure out how to do a separate comment in this section. Anyway, here’s one you missed. “Asymmetry” Japanese 2008. Bittersweet ending. I’ve seen it and it’s quite good.

  • Reply Greta Fye March 10, 2016 at 2:35 am

The first one “Tomorrow I’ll Still Love You” was a big hit in Asia, and the two actors (Oh and Fluke) were shipped together for several years. There’s a lot of tragedy in the drama, but It ends happily. “Varieties of Love” is also very good, also with a lot of tragedy, but it too ends happily. Club Friday 2 doesn’t end happily, but you might want to watch it for Oh and Bom; their scenes together are very sweet and romantic. Club Friday 3 was beautiful; it didn’t end happily, but it’s worth watching if you can find it. I didn’t get a chance to see Club Friday 5 before it was taken down, so I don’t know how it ends. If I find Club Friday 3 and 5, I’ll post it here.

I stumbled upon your site after watching Love Sick. I’m so in love with Puhn/Noh! I need more! I’ve been on a hunt for a series like this since I started watching kdramas in 2009. Thank you for your suggestions. In my search over the years, I have already watched quite a bit of the suggestions made here and totally agree with your opinions. Keep up the good work!!!!

    • Reply Stephanie March 31, 2016 at 9:50 pm

GAH! Aren’t Phun/Noh wonderful? That show (minus the girl parts shoehorned in) just makes me so happy. Unfortunately, I think LoveSick is the best of the best, so it’s hard to go from there. Did you try Heroin? It has flaws but is not nearly as bad as CounterAttack. Ooh and the Seven Days, except that’s a movie. Thanks for reading!

Hello!! I’ve been steadily working my way through this list for the last month or so (thank you so so sooooo much for the happy/bittersweet/sad ending tips) and thought I’d let you know, if anyone else hasn’t already, that Jinroh Shokei Game has actually been subbed by Aarinfantasy. They don’t consider it an official project per se and say there may be some errors but it’s better than nothing, yeah?

Have you heard about the upcoming Thai drama “Make It Right”? It’s based on a popular BL web novel & it’s made by the same creators of season 1 of Lovesick the Series! The story’s so cute, you’ll love it XD

Here’s the official trailer that’s just been released: https://youtu.be/WrgSXJk_8qE

I have another recommendation for you, to what is in my opinion that best and most beautiful BL drama I’ve ever watched (and a lot of fans agree!)

It’s a 4-episode drama called Gray Rainbow that aired recently, it’s getting English subbed here:

    Great list!

I’d like to recommend a Thai drama called ‘Part time the series’. I’m really enjoying it.
It has BL, straight and GL elements.
It’s currently airing atm so I can’t say anything about the ending but I’m enjoying the Journey (I’m rooting for my fav ship to make it, but I usually don’t have much luck haha #teamHallTi)

There are 22 episodes available on Youtube, only 6 episodes have been subbed so far.

    • Reply Stephanie August 10, 2016 at 10:37 pm

I’m assuming you haven’t seen Two Weddings and a Funeral because there is no review? If not you have to! It has some sad parts to get through but also some reeeeally adorable/funny ones. Also a super cute ending (I hate a sad ending so no probs there) and pretty good quality in my opinion. The closeted main character is a touch annoying, but it all works out in the end!

    • Reply Talie Walker August 20, 2016 at 2:51 am

PS: Love of Siam is also pretty cute, but has a bittersweet ending and is more about one of the boy’s families issues than anything. Some precious kissing scenes and soppy romantic singing moments though so, if you don’t mind the occasional bittersweet, it’s a good young love story.

      • Reply Stephanie August 27, 2016 at 10:46 am

I want to say I saw that one, but it may have just been one I saw the end on. For research I know I should watch it, but it’s hard knowing where it ends up.

        • Reply ngracew April 17, 2017 at 2:54 am

Fair enough with Love of Siam. You really HAVE to watch Two Weddings and a Funeral though. Seriously. I’ve seen it probably 20 times now and it makes me cry my eyes out (both laughing and sobbing) every time!

  • Reply Jelly September 3, 2016 at 3:35 pm

Uncontrolled Love is so sad but so nice though. I was shocked when I saw you saying it’s bad. The master is harsh but you can’t blame him. He really loves xiao nian but can’t seems to accept it. If you can’t bear with it, it’s better to not watch Season 2 with the sad ending (you can probably try the happy ending once they release it). I’d say the male leads did a very good job in acting and portraying the characters’ emotions. It’s a highly recommended BL movie! You sure get disappointed with the master’s attitude but you will feel touched seeing how much he cared for xiao nian.

P/S : Watch the video/interviews of the two and you will definitely not regret it! If you hate how much a douche the master is in the movie, you will surely fall in love with how gentle and funny he really is 🙂

I sow most of the movies and your review for most it’s accurate
the best of them with happy ending but still open it’s “Heroine”. super amazing drama. very cute, tuching story
you can get SOTUS 2016 eng sub at youtube.
i also love the Yandai byway no.10 drama but it’s stop for now because of what happening in china.
    also from Japan i recommand
Doushitemo furetakunai (2014) the J Movie.
Kdrama is the most touching and real full of humor films but their ending is so sad that i don’t want to watch it any more, anyways i watched already the “beautiful life couple years a go and it was good also Ya-gan-bi-haeng (2014) was amazing film but very sad also most of your list.
swap also is good until the last 6 episode that their body switch and for me it’s just lame. but i’m gonna give it a chance.
the best so far it the web chinese series. and of course love sick just because i fell in love with Kongyingyong Chonlathorn and skip all the parts without him
Counter Attack Falling In Love With A Rival seasone one was very funny and season 2 was less good, also like love the 1 seasone was better then the others.
Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow 2013 was very boring and depressing i think ..and also Seven Days Friday – Sunday 2015 was slow and boring .. they didn’t talk as normal people and it’s frustrating

    • Reply Stephanie September 20, 2016 at 12:46 pm

Hi! I just wanted to tell you guys that Grey Rainbow is really-really good. It’s a slowburn romance between the main characters but it’s realistic and sweet (altough the beginning is a little bit awkward). The first 3 episodes are great but the 4th one is a little bit rushed and the ending is very shocking and sudden… that’s why i wouldn’t give a 5/5 to this series only a 4/5. I honestly did not want to watch any more BL series after i finished Grey Rainbow it totally consumed me. If you can see past the strange ending, you could say it’s a happy ending. But I would say it’s bittersweet.

Oh yeah, and the actors are SUPER HOT. I know that’s nothing special because almost everyone is really hot in these BL series but Nuer and Porsche are outstandingly hot IMO. I have a heart attack every time they smile (especially Nuer)!!!!

    • Reply Stephanie December 24, 2016 at 2:25 pm

I’m still worried about continuing with the watch as I have heard about that ending. I feel like, since the rest is so good, it would tear apart my poor little heart.

  • Reply vigilante December 16, 2016 at 10:36 am

the ending of “Heroin” is a little bit of a “hanger” but i dont hate them its just that i hope that they will release its season 2 soon.. I am also updated in “Sotus” and watch all of its episodes available. Also “Make it Right” its a good tv series. “Love Sick” is a good one also. but I like “Sotus” and “Heroin” the most because of the good combination of the characters (“sotus”= hazer and the junior, “Heroin”= the aggressive/romantic/funny Gu Hai and the sweet/charming Bai Luoyin), so yeah they’re good.

PS. can anyone suggest another BL tv series, because i prefer tv series than movies and also only “BL” not “gay” because the thought of it is so cute. I would really appreciate your help. thank you!!!

    • Reply Stephanie December 24, 2016 at 2:22 pm

You watched Love sick, right? Riiiiight? If not, go outside and watch it right now. Also, though the story is mixed in with other storylines, I completely recommend the Korean drama Life Is Beautiful. So touching.

There is a Thai gay drama which I loved, it’s called Bad Romance: The Series.

Hello! Just thought I’d let you know that I watched The Handmaiden a few days ago, and despite it looking pretty touch and go for a while, there IS a happy ending! There’s quite a few WTF? moments in there, mostly related to the thriller aspect of the plot and Hideko’s awful uncle, but overall I really enjoyed it both as a film and an LGBT film. Hideko and Sookhee aren’t defined by their sexualities and no effort was made to hide them either. It was really refreshing to see a lesbian couple face difficulty over something that wasn’t fear of catching the gay, and to then see them triumph over that difficulty, I’d definitely recommend you give it a watch 🙂
(There’s quite a bit of the ol’ boom boom jiggity too.)

oh if u like handmaiden i think u’d like “blue is the warmest color” and “room in rome”…artistic!!!

Hi! This list is amazing! I know you are including only those dramas/movies that are lgbt and not subtext, but I really wanted to recommend Please, Come Back Mister. It’s the “man in a woman’s body” type of drama, but the chemistry between Oh Yeon Seo and Honey Lee it’s amazing and the whole story is worth watching. So go watch it!

I’m not have luck finding out some information on a K-Drama Night Light. Is it lesbian or not? Will they, have they, or are they a couple?

    • Reply fann February 27, 2017 at 11:55 pm

No, it doesn’t have any lesbian relationship. It more like admiration..? The younger girl is poor and feels atracted to the power that the older has, and wants to be like her. The older sees herself in the younger so they bond pretty fast. A lot of people ship it tho, I’ve seen a couple of videos on youtube and they are strong woman and powerful.

I watched a couple of episodes and droped it, it was kinda slow and boring for me, at least.

  • Reply Etern February 16, 2017 at 12:27 pm

Hi, thanks for the list.. I was looking everywhere for some of sort of list about lgbt movies in Asia. This was insightful although I haven’t watched 95% of them. However, I did watch The Dreamer (mini-series) and though I think it was more of a promotional stunt for products of a certain company, it was okay for me. The series only has 4 episodes so it was really short. They didn’t discuss the issues of being gay or whatever (the main character was workaholic so yeah, it was all about her work, the relationship was just sort of a sideline to the story) but they were some sweet and really funny moments. The girls were both pretty, and the boy was cute.

So, I was sick in bed today and none of my usual dramas were cutting it. So I decided to catch up on some BL movies/series…

    Candy and Kiss https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMIhl46CUGU
    – I found the main character (Maeda-kun) to be quite exhausting in his constant need for affirmation and ridiculous anxiety. He was a constant ball of angst that would eventually almost cost him his ‘ship’. I also think the actor was miscast for the wallflower, shy type. IDK, this person interpretation of the character was to play him on odd and sometimes childish side. HIs love interest (Yagii-san) was a hottie tho’. I didn’t believe these actors would fall for each other, although, with a different actor- I can believe the storyline a lot more. Anyway , happy ending

    WaterBoyy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nloRqlFXQk
-Interesting watch. I still have Earn stuck in my head…so Nam did not translate as a different character to me. In fact, he acted just like Earn in certain parts, which was not good. But he did have a lot of chemistry with OTP and there was one very steamy kiss scene that was worth the watch (not just lips pressed together or the “oh so close, but yet so far” pretend kiss some of these dramas try to fake us out with. Happy ending. Some plot holes . All in all. OK

    History: My Hero https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5bwg0o_episode-1-history-my-hero-boy-love-movie_shortfilms
-Story of a woman who dies. In order for her not to be forgotten by her love (bf). So her soul jumps into the body of a boy, with a goal that she has 7 days to make her bf fall in love with her (or him). Many were not happy with the body swap idea, bc they classify it as not true BL. But it turns out to be a really cute series. Worth the watch until the end. I can’t find any ENG subs, so I watched it without subs.

Also, Diary of Tootsie is back with a Season 2!!!!! I really enjoyed Season 1 for it’s slice of life portrayal of 4 gay besties. Can’t wait to see more of this series.

I rarely make posts here, but I always check back into this site to see if any new series are out. Keep it up. Love it.

It really hard to find K-dramas that are willing to deal with LGBT stories, and I’m recommending this dramas since I saw that seonam high school club (?) was on the list and only had 1 episode about a lesbian couple, so I hope it’s ok to recommend this dramas.

The K2 – okay, i think everyone knows this drama, or at least has heard of it, I started watching it because of Yoona, and surprisingly found out that the Secretary of the Step mother of the character of Yoona, had a huge crush on her boss (and she knew that -her boss, i mean). The sad part is that she used that against her many times, and at the end, even tho a lot of people died, she didn’t and had a somewhat not so sad ending.
    Sidestory.

Voice – Even tho the story is good so far the acting could be better. The plot is about two cops trying to catch the psychopath that killed the father of the main f protagonist and the wife of the main m protanist. On one of the episodes (it was between episode 9 and 11, can’t remember, sorry), a cop coligue gets himself involved into a mess thanks to a lunatic guy that was obsessed with him. The way they treat queer people it’s kinda cringey, but I’m not sure if I’m exagerating (i’m really sensitive about this stuff) or if it was really that bad, or maybe it was because lgbt themes in a kdrama is still new and they still don’t know how to deal with it..? But I think you should watch it yourself and decide for yourself.

Another thing, Hormones 3 has an open ending to the lesbian couple, but It was happy. They deal with their parents acepting them and everything works out in the end (I saw it a long time ago and my memory could be wrong, but at least I remember it with a happy -open- ending.

Stephanie, thanks for the list but I really hate how you commented on the films/series. You’re so insensitive and I think it’s annoying how much of a spoiler you became. I think it would be better if you just said you liked them or not. You played favoritism. Your comments would make people not watch some of them and I really hate that because I really love sole of your recommendations and people will be stopped to watch them just because of your comments? That’s an injustice to the beauty represented by these work of arts.

Advance Bravery has been a fun one, but so far I can only find good video of part 1-2, part 3 is hard to come by (maybe because it jst released), and 4 doesn’t look like it is out yet. However, there really isn’t a “triangle” between the sister and the brother because the Xia Yao has literally NO interest in her. In fact, he spends most of the first two parts trying to get her to leave him alone. That’s really all I’m going to say, but the story is pretty funny so far and had me giggling allt he way through.

Turns out? Technically it’s not out yet. It isn’t scheduled for release until the end of the year, what’s out there are, depending on the theory, promotional episodes, or episodes that were stolen.

Taiwan’s Gloomy salad days. High school/ supernatural/ urban legend. Deals with teen issues and three of the stories involve gay/lesbian/trans relationships. I do recommend to watch the entire thing or at least the first 3 episodes for the story to make more sense.

The only one of the three with a happy end is the gay relationship, I believe it was episodes 13 and 14. Unfortunately, I can’t recall which episodes the other two were but I remember they were before the gay couple and the two were connected. Before you assume that the sad endings only involve LGBT, the series is about teen issues and quite a few have sad endings when the characters were unable to overcome their obstacles in life.

The gay couple story line: Xiao Lun is an openly effeminate boy who loves designing nails and practices it on his female classmates. He is often bullied and extorted by Da Dong and other boys who seems to make it his hobby to torment the other boy. One day Xiao Lun gets away from Da Dong after a nasty encounter and finds a mysterious rock that has a spirit attached to it. Du, the spirit appears and makes an offer to him that comes with a heavy price; Xiao Lun only wants the bullying to stop. One day Da Dong is rescued by Xiao Lun and their relationship changes.

Hi Stephanie, you REALLY need to watch the latest Thai BL series [Love By Chance]. There are 4 BL couples in the series and each of them have their own unique personalities and amazing story lines. Highly HIGHLY RECOMMEND. If you are interested, here is the link with Eng sub
    https://www.facebook.com/notes/lazy-subber/ep-list-love-by-chance-ep3-subbed/663337274033727/
There are several reuploaders on youtube who also post the series right after the producer release a new episode, but please PLEASE do not support them by watching their vids. The producer publish episodes for free on Line TV. The more views they get, the higher chance they will release season 2.

    Trying to find this BL.
So I remember only the beginning for some reason and it went like this “it starts with a guy (1) cooking all kinds of foods and bringing them to the table where another guy(2) was sitting. Guy(2) was playing computer games on his computer and guy(1) told him stop so they can eat. Guy(2) doesn’t stop playing instead starts eating while playing.” The next scene I remember is guy(1) being in school ( he was wearing long black pants and a white t-shirt) and three or two guys invited him to watch a movie ( a gay movie i think) with them but he said no and walked away calling guy(2). I am not sure if it’s actually a Thailand bl.

Idk if it’s a movie or a serie, but I remember seeing it in an adults web and it was about a romance, little spicy, that happened on a hospital between a male nurse and the head doctor. If I remember correctly it was from Japan. Some things I remember id that the nurse boy was the only male in his job, he was cute and at some point was attacked by a patient but the doctor saved him, the doctor was super messy and the nurse visited him to clean his house and make food for him, it was divided in two videos, and that have +18 scene.
