And so begins the battle between brother and sister for the most coveted price – Xia Yao’s heart.

Movie/Gay/Main Storyline/

Stephanie’s Note: Huh. Part of this sounds great but then the brother/sister love triangle can’t be good and may chase me away.

Stephanie’s Second Note: I started reading the book it comes from. It will be interesting to see how they pull this off as there is essentially no other plot but these two guys getting together and then getting it on. Also. Its like a million chapters long.

Stephanie’s Third Note: I finally watched this one! It was cute, made me really wish I could see an unedited version. The one issue I had was it just….stopped. Probably because it could only be a bromance? Build up, build up, then…nothing. I did like it when Yuan Zong warned the bad guys away from Xia Yao. Swoon! I rewatched THAT a few time!

Alternative Love 2016

alternative loveHuh. Can’t find a synopsis on this one, let’s see if I can’t make one up. New kid in town gets a heart on for one of his only friend’s boyfriend. Manages to get friend’s boyfriend to like him, causing his only friend to turn on him. Then friend’s boyfriend (now his boyfriend) fights with his mom, mom ends up in the hospital, movie ends in a angsty rain scene between the boyfriend, boyfriend, and ex-girlfriend. Apparently, there will be a ‘season’ 2, but this is badly acted, very badly written, and should just be a pass. There are so many more out there that are better than this piece of gay-baiting. (Apparently, I have OH-pinions on this movie…)

Stephanie’s Note: From the reviews, this isn’t so much gay as it is gay-baiting however, since it’s from China in the last few months, I’m giving it a pass as, since their LGBT restrictions have gotten so tight, I’m guessing it’s the only thing they can get through the sensors.

Movie/Gay/Main Storyline/Happy Ending

Stephanie Note: I liked Like Love the first movie in the series because it didn’t play to makjang stereotypes, but this one? Yeah, every angsty thing that could happen did—and then it ended on an obvious cliff-hanger for part 3—and it left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Not to mention all the online versions cut out all the boom boom jiggity scenes.

LAUGH! Sorry about that. 🙂 Unfortunately, with the Chinese movies, I’m not sure if it’s because of the censors or what but a lot of them are of either really poor quality or have really, really bad (especially sad) endings. A couple of my favorites do come from there though, I really like Heroin and Like Love. (Though, I’m super bummed where Like Love 2 ended.)

you should definitely check out HIStory! it’s a really funny short drama with an adorable ending. considering the description of the show felt a bit gaybait-ish and the fact that it’s a chinese drama, it surprised me how it didn’t shy away from the relationship between the two boys and the struggles one of them had while accepting his sexuality. it’s really good and worth watching!

It’s one of my favorites. There are three(?) couples. The main, the side brothers(not related, so I support.), and then the twins(not fully supporting that because, they are twins! Incest). The twins only have one scene that really said, “Hey, these two are gay as well.” Other than that, they just looked like close brothers. The ‘brothers’ were really cute, and some people might not it, but they are only brothers because their parents got married, but their story is still really cute, and how they act(<3). The main story has a heartbreaking scene leading up to the good ending! And all this is based around volleyball.

But basically it’s about two guys who are aspiring musicians….one is nerdy and write songs…one is a rich kid who ran away from home to pursue music….and they end up living together….while a persistent girl stalks the nerdy kid. ..

(Not explicit BL but implied…they are practically living together)

U should watch the untamed bcz of untamed i came searching for LGBTQ dramas. It is more like a bromance drama than romance bcz the novel has romance content but in drama very longing stares n caring for each other. But a very beautiful drama. Other than main leads, other actors were wonderful too.. I’m having hard time moving on from the drama. I should stop my rants. Anyway The untamed is a must watch.

Guess? Why do you seem not certain? 😉

Guardian-Chinese drama-2018… is a bromance, not BL. Though the novel it’s based on is BL and the drama reeeeeaally pushes the censors limits. It’s very good with bittersweet ending, but no, it’s not bl.

    Hi Stephanie.,

I watched Chinese BL Drama the “THIRD COUNTRY”. May i know both of them a death? Or only A REN who commit suicide?

    Thank you.

Guardian is based on a BL novel by Priest, but because of the censors they turned the explicit romance into “bromance”/brotherly love. It’s still pretty damn gay, though, as the actors and writers really committed themselves to portraying the relationship as the focal point of the whole show. Production values are so-so, and the story suffers from the need to turn all supernatural elements into “sci-fi” due to censorship, but it’s utterly addictive, thanks to the main characters. (Seriously, it’s as gay as you can get in China these days, I think, with lots of flirting, longing glances and sacrificing themselves for each other – so no happy ending, but very emotionally satisfying.)

Love Is More Than A Word-is on youtube with English subtitles. It’s beautiful, and in SPITE of the damned censors… almost every episode is censored, and they had to wrap the storyline up very quickly-they were suppost to have 20 something episodes, but were forced to finish up in 12 episodes. And to really be agravating, the online novel hasn’t been translated yet. Or only the first 5 chapters, anyway.

Farewell My Concubine-1993 I’m not really certain if this was an Hong Kong or Mainland China production. Beautiful film with sad ending, but well worth watching. Starring Leslie Cheung

You should definitely watch Advance Bravely! 2 series so far and no talk of relationship or kissing but longing looks and lots of sharing beds whilst shirtless- platonically of course! The sister thing isn’t that bad she essentially fancies him and gets her brother to try and get him for her but apart from some scenes where she’s annoyingly all over him, nothing happens-he has no interest in her whatsoever. There are episodes on youtube but they’re missing like 5mins from each episode for some reason. Best to watch elsewhere. Hoping season 3 might come out Feb/March time. Only one series a year unfortunately with 15 reps a series at approx. 22 mins an ep (2 of which is the opening theme). I recommend this series to anyone. The guys are really hot as a bonus and lots of shapely bare chest scenes! 🙂

I don’t know how updated this list is but The Untamed should definitely be added!

    • Reply Stephanie January 13, 2020 at 10:08 pm

I struggle with Untamed! Is it really LGBT where they bromanced it? Although I do have Advance Bravely up there, and they sadly did the same thing. I’ll add it in the next go!

      • Reply u4ic June 5, 2020 at 1:11 am

Oh I haven’t read or listened to any of the other adaptations, but just being queer myself, I absolutely did not perceive any part of it as bromance. Even if it’s not super explicit it’s definitely LGBT all the way !! Especially because yes, it WAS adapted from the original novel where they ARE EXPLICITLY in a gay relationship!

The Untamed is worth to watch, so many wisdom to learn from the drama. Yet two thumbs up for the lead actors who successfully delivering the romance in the air even there is no kiss or sex between them. I don’t think bromance would act like the way they did in the drama. Explicit is No, but their feeling speak through their eyes for sure.

The Untamed is based on the BL novel Mo Dao Zu Shi. Obviously because it’s Chinese and the censor is The Thing To Do, it’s not explicit at all. But the actors do play it like a romance and the lead couple refer to each other as their soulmate at least five times (it’s even in the Netflix description lol). It’s not going to have kissing or sex but the romance and feelings are there. I went into watching it having read the book and listened to the audio drama (which is pretty dang explicit) so that might have colored how I viewed it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I would consider it worth the watch. They even asked the men who did the voices of the leads in the audio drama to voice over the actors in the Untamed and they damn sure played it gay in the audio drama so
