Movie/Gay/Main Storyline/Happy Ending

Stephanie Note: Watch it. Seriously just watch it. Well, watch it after watching the first part of the series. Then go read the manga.

The Shortest Distance (2019)

Haruto spends a lonely high school. The new teacher, Aoyama, cares about him and starts an exchange diary. Haruto gradually opens up, but one day, when he was resting because of a cold, he was kissed by Aoyama who came to visit him. Agitated by the sudden incident, Haruto violently refused and Aoyama was chased away from teaching. Three years later: Haruto, who graduated from high school and became a host, has debts and sells his body. But suddenly he mets Aoyama again. The film has two versions: 《blanc》(rated 15+) and 《noir》 (rated 18+).

Movie/Gay/Main Storyline/ Questionable Ending

Stephanie’s Note: There are two versions of this movie, Blanc which has more a romantic happy ending and noir where the ending twists and you go WTF? Both versions are exactly the same with the exception of the last 15 minutes. Its hilarious how they are rated differently when both versions are STRAIGHT UP PORN. I could not look away, gobsmacked the whole way through. While the teacher portion of it makes this whole thing gross even in the happy ending, the Noir version takes that and makes it even worse. I still am trying to figure out who is in that last picture and its driving me crazy.

SukitomoSukitomo (2007)

Young and earnest, Tomokazu is a third year college student and also a member of the boxing team. He has a great friendship with Yoshiki, who he sees as a younger brother. But, unlike Tomozaku, Yoshiki’s feelings are much deeper. To complete the confusion, Tomozaku’s stepsister Misao (Komatsu Airi), also secretly nurtures feelings for him and starts to get jealous of the relationship of two friends. What Tomozaku will do when he finds out about the true feelings of Yoshiki and Misao?

Takumi Kun Series

takumi kunSeries  1; And The Spring Breeze Whispers (2007)

Set at Shidou Gakuin, a boys’ Boarding school, situated off the beaten track. In the second year at school, Takumi Hayama is allocated a room in a dorm to share with Giichi Saki, AKA Gii. Gii was brought up abroad and is the school idol with his exceptional academic performance, as well as his good looks. One day, Gii confesses to Takumi that he has been in love with Takumi for some time. This unexpected truth of events unsettles Takumi, however, he comes to realize the true sensitivity of Gii.

Movie/Gay/Main Storyline/Happy Ending

Stephanie Note: This movie is the introduction to the series, however after this one they recast the main couple, so it kind of stands out. Weird thing is that they have a higher production value here and a better couple in the following ones. After watching it for the first time, I didn’t need to go back. (Especially after finding the fanmade version of the first movie using hte replacement couple.)

takumi kun 2Series 2;  Rainbow Colored Glass (2009)

This is the second part of the Takumi-kun series. Takumi and Gii are now a couple and the envy of the whole school. However, their relationship becomes rocky when first year student Morita Tooru appears in the picture. Hayama Takumi begins to doubt Gii’s love, and thinks that his lover has given up on him and has moved on to Morita, a freshman student. How will the story end? Will Takumi and Gii eventually break up, or will their love become stronger as they fight for their love?

Movie/Gay/Main Storyline/Happy Ending

Stephanie Note: I really don’t like this epsiode, but it’s still Takumi Kun so I’ll skim through it. I’m just not as interested in a story that is not Takumi and Gii based.

The Beauty of DetailSeries 3; The Beauty of Detail (2010)

The third live-action film based on Goto Shinobus yaoi light novel series Takumi-kun, Bibo no Detail continues the boys love tales of romance, friendship, and all that angst at an all-boys boarding school.

Movie/Gay/Main Storyline/Happy Ending

Stephanie Note: Series 2, series 5 and the fan made version of the first movie are the ones I go back to all the time. I love it when Takumi stands up to Gii, although the forced separation is irritating since it doesn’t have a reasoning for it.

PureSeries 4; Pure (2010)

Different from 3 previous movies, this Takumi Pure’s movie is focus on the relationship between Misu Arata (Ryouma) and Shingyouji Kanemitsu (Taiki). Started from their 1st meeting when Shingyouji was taken the test to enter in Shidou Gakuen as a junior high student and felt in love with Misu at the first sight, and two years later in the present time. The appearance of the legendary sempai; Sagara Takahiro (Yuusuke) became aproblem between them ’cause Misu is always admire Sagara-sempai. Takumi (Mao), Gii (Daisuke), and Akaike (Takki) want to help Misu and Shingyouji in this matter. On the other side, there’s also a little side-story of Takabayashi (Ryo) and his lover Yoshizawa (Yutaka).

Movie/Gay/Main Storyline/Happy Ending

Stephanie Note: Eh. I watched it the one time and never felt the urge to go back to it. I guess if it weren’t based on Takumi and Gii, I didn’t care.

hat, Sunny Blue SkySeries 5; That, Sunny Blue Sky (2011)

It’s June of their third year of high school, and Takumi has an important anniversary to attend back in his hometown. He wants to invite Gii along for the trip, but time and scheduling and possibly broken promises stand in the way. 5th and final film to feature Daisuke Watanabe and Kyosuke Hamao as Saki Giichi and Takumi Hayama respectfully.

Movie/Gay/Main Storyline/Happy Ending

Stephanie Note: We’re back to their fake separation, but at least they are on the same page, until they aren’t. Bad video quality (could they not afford a tripod, at all???) but I have to say, I do love this series.

DaiMao version

Youtube fanmade video using deleted scenes, flash backs, and other bits to recreate the first movie using the actors from the rest of the series, sounds weird but it’s actually better than the real first movie.

Movie/Gay/Main Storyline/Happy Ending

Stephanie Note: See above, I wrote that it’s a great version of the first movie and whoever did it did a great job!

Bokura no Ai no Kanade – beautiful movie, the only problem is descending into realism at the end

Seven Days – the best BL movies I’ve ever seen – watch them

How is that one? The description says something like more than friends less than lovers so I’m like, where does that leave us? Maybe I’ll have to give it a watch.

There’s a movie called River’s Edge with Nikaido Fumi in it that just came out recently and I think there is some kind of relationship side story.

  • Reply Nao November 1, 2018 at 2:07 pm

Ossan’s Love was a very good drama I really recommend it!! I was actually worried if it would just be an all out comedy mocking the gay characters but I was pleasantly surprised. Although its pretty crammed together and still does have some minor issues, I think it’s a pretty standard drama and a good step for Japan with LGBTQ+ media (it was aired on a public broadcast)

A story of Yonosuke (2013) has one gay character, Kato played by Go Ayano who was in Anger/Rage. It’s not the main story but he is one of the main charcters, the movie in general is amazing.

I think ”Kinou Nani Tabeta?”/“What did you eat Yesterday? “ would be a lovely addition to the list! It’s based off of the manga with the same name and is about the daily happenings of an older gay couple. It’s a feel good “slice of life” drama and I think has some of the healthiest/realistic depiction I’ve ever seen. I believe it should be available subbed on dramacool!!

there is a Jdrama that focuses on intersex people, which is IS: Otoko Demo Onna Demo Nai Sei [there’s also a manga that the Jdrama is based off of too…].
it’s sad at some parts, but it’s really good in showcasing how intersex people are facing a lot of anti-intersex [or intersexphobia/interphobia] sentiment and bigotry in society as well along with the challenges they face (I.e., being forced into intersex genitalia mutilation (or IGM for short which focuses on the supposed “normalization” of diverse appearances of genitalia that intersex folks are naturally born with, and they also have a diverse amount of chromosomes such as XXY, XO, XXXY, XXYY, etc… but those IGM surgeries do not help intersex individuals with their personal bodily autonomy because they bring shame, trauma, along with intersex folks being silenced into ‘secrecy’ to try to coddle society’s binaristic perception of what biological sex is and/or what gender identity is to them).

I recommend reading the manga first before watching the Jdrama…

Have you heard of/seen the newish Japanese mini series called “Life – Love on the Line” on Viki? It was only 4 episodes (I think only like 30 minutes each) but I really liked both main actors and the story. It was character based and not as skinship heavy as some of the Thai dramas but it reminded me a bit of the 7 day 2 part series – but slightly more mature?

    Hi, there!

Thank you for the list. A lot of the well known ones I have watched, but there are a lot of lesser known drama/movies on this list that I haven’t seen yet. Thank you, I will enjoy them! I’m currently watching Cherry Magic, 30 year old Virginity one and I absolutely adore it!

Btw, since you seemed to be well versed in this BL stuff, I was wondering if you knew the title of this movie. I watched it so long ago that my premise of the story is really hazy. I don’t really remember much, but I think one of the main leads had a heart disease, and that the other main male lead took care of him (and maybe he was possibly a doctor?). In the end, the 2nd male lead had donated his heart to the 1st male lead. And it turns out the 2nd male lead was dying from some kind of brain condition, but he never told the 1st male lead and the 1st male lead didn’t realize until he had already given him his heart. And I think there was a lot of scenes of them at the beach; I think they lived in a house near the ocean.

I don’t remember the movie containing much romance-y or Bl-ish acts, and wasn’t sure if the movie was light enough on the implications of their relationship that it was even tagged as “bl” or maybe it was labeled as “really light shounen-ai” or maybe it was more of the bromance label. I doubt the movie had anything that involved them really kissing or anything. I know the movie was made before 2015, and possibly even before 2012. And about 90% sure it was Japanese, because back then I mostly just watched was Japanese stuff. If it’s not Japanese, then possibly Korean.

Dangerous Drugs of Sex. Movie. BDSM. Movie was definitely so much better than the manga. It blew my mind. I loved the tastefulness of the director. Heavy themes though, may not be for everyone.
